Anatomical pathology of burn wound healing treated with kersen leaf ( Muntingia calabura L.) in white rats ( Rattus novergicus)

Abstract

Burn wound is a form of damage and/or loss of tissue caused by contact with a heat source and high temperature or very low temperature. The aims of this study was to determine the effect of kersen leaf extract (Muntingiacalabura L.) in gel and cream base forms on the healing of burn wounds in white rats (Rattusnorvegicus) observed for 14 days in second-degree burn. There are two types of observation parameters in this study. Cut wound parameters are the length of the wound, redness, swelling, the formation of scabs and the removal of scabs. Burn wound parameters are the extent of the wound, redness, blistering, swelling, initial scab formation, and scab detachment. Fortytwo male white rats weighing 150-200 grams aged 7-8 weeks were used as experimental animals. Wounds were made on the back area measuring 2 cm for cut wounds for groups P1 to P7 and 2 cm x 2 cm for burn wounds for groups P8 to P14. Wound treatment was performed twice a day for 14 days, with P1 and P8 as negative controls given physiological NaCl, followed by three groups of wounds given kersen leaf extract gel 5%, 10%, 15% respectively, and three other groups given kersen leaf extract cream 5%, 10%, and 15% respectively. The results showed that the application of kersen leaf extract gel could accelerate the healing of burn wounds than kersen leaf extract cream. The conclusion of this research was that the gel formulation was more effective for burn wounds. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
