Platinum(ll) and palladium(ll) complexes of chiral P-Cl functionalized bis-phosphino ortfto-carbaborane are readily obtained from reactions of chiral bidentate phosphino carbaborane ligands rac-1, 2-(PRCI)2(C 2B10H10) with [MCI2(COD)] (M = Pd, Pt; COD = 1, 5-cyclooctadiene) to give cis-rac-[MCI2{1,2-(PRCI) 2(C2B10H10)}] (M = Pt, Pd; R = Bu, Ph, NEt2, NPh2). cis-rac-[MCl2{1,2-(PBuCl) 2(C2B1OH1O))] [M = Pt (1), Pd (6)] decompose in solution in toluene or dichloromethane at room temperature over several weeks with formation of the corresponding dinuclear platinum and palladium complex with two nido-carbaboranyl phosphine ligands, (R p,Rp,Sp,Sp)-[{M(7,8-{P tBuCl}2C2B9H10)(μ-CI)} 2] [M = Pt (2), Pd (7)], among other decomposition products. © 2009 American Chemical Society.
