An important step in selecting and designing an appropriate building foundation system is evaluating the soil's compressibility characteristics. The compression index is one of the soil compressibility characteristics used to calculate the foundation's consolidation settlement. The compression index (Cc) is obtained from laboratory tests using an oedometer. The test is time-consuming and requires high skill in interpreting the laboratory test results for application to field conditions. The consolidation parameter or compression index can be obtained from empirical formulas, when relatively quick data is required for project implementation. This study aims to evaluate the validity of published empirical correlations for calculating the Cc value of backfill soils. A comparison is done between the laboratory compression index and the compression index calculated from twenty-five empirical correlations, namely the K validity test. Soil samples from 10 backfill sites in various areas in the Aceh Besar region. Based on the results of the K validity test, the correlation proposed by Berutu (2019) with the equation Cc = (6.12 x 10-5)(Gs)8.3561, gave the best prediction with an average K of 1.49. Spesific Gravity (Gs) as a variable gives the most precise prediction for Cc with an average deviation standard (SD) of 0.78. Thus, the most efficient parameter correlation is the correlation proposed by Berutu (2019), among the correlation formulas that have been analyzed and can be recommended for calculating the Cc value of backfill soil in the Aceh Besar region. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
