Analyzing disaster risk in settlement, especially in areas prone to disasters, is one of the key elements of disaster mitigation. However, different geographic locations influence different disaster risks, as well as different settlement distribution patterns between settlement in the urban and coastal of Banda Aceh. This research aims to identify settlement distribution and characteristics in the urban and coastal areas of Banda Aceh and recommend mitigation concepts for the two gampongs with different geographical conditions. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with analysis techniques superimposed by overlapping disaster maps and land use maps using ArcGIS software. Data collection techniques, including observation, interviews, and documentation, are also used to analyze settlement characteristics. The research findings indicate that settlement distribution in the urban and coastal areas of Banda Aceh is subject to different levels of disaster vulnerability. Gampong Seutui as an urban area has a distribution of settlement in earthquake, tsunami, and liquefaction locations with high and moderate levels of vulnerability, while Gampong Deah Raya as a coastal area has very high and high levels of vulnerability to tsunami and liquefaction disasters. The characteristics of settlement in the urban and coastal areas of Banda Aceh have similarities, being dominated by inhabitable houses with ownership status, however, there are differences in terms of house density, house shape, and house arrangement patterns. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
