Abstract

As the population grows and industrialization intensifies, the availability of clean water is diminishing. Approximately 80% of industrial wastewater is discharged untreated into the environment, with 17–20% of it being dominated by dyes. Among these dyes, methylene blue (MB) is widely used in the textile industry due to its affordable price. However, during the methylene blue staining process, only about 5% is actually utilized, while the remainder is discarded. Exposure to methylene blue can lead to gastrointestinal irritation if ingested, cyanosis if inhaled, and skin irritation upon contact. Special precautions are necessary to handle this substance due to its adverse health effects. Additionally, the mounting plastic waste, increasing by 14% annually (equivalent to 85,000 tons per year), poses another significant challenge. In the realm of water treatment, membranes offer a promising solution. These membranes can be constructed from cost-effective materials, and one such material is high-density polyethylene (HDPE). In this study, HDPE plastic waste will be transformed into a membrane, aiming to remove methylene blue from water. The research explores various membrane compositions and their effectiveness in methylene blue removal. Notably, the R-HDPE 10% membrane exhibited a water flux of 24.43 L/m2h, a methylene blue flux of 11.61 L/m2h, and a methylene blue rejection rate of 76.13%. © 2025 American Institute of Physics Inc..
