Optimization of culture media for the growth of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) maggot population, Hermetia illucens

Abstract

Maggot or black soldier fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens are potential alternative natural feed ingredients for aquaculture due to their high protein, essential fatty acids, and amino acids. This study aimed to determine the optimal combination of organic waste substrates to enhance BSF maggot larvae growth. The experiment used a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with six treatments and three replications: TW (100% tofu waste), VW (100% vegetable waste), FW (100% fish waste), TVW (50% tofu + 50% vegetable waste), TFW (50% tofu + 50% fish waste), and VFW (50% vegetable + 50% fish waste). Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's HSD test (α = 0.05). The highest maggot population density was recorded in TW (59 ± 30 individuals/cm3) and the lowest in FW (29 ± 11 individuals/cm3), though the difference was not significant (p>0.05). Growth in weight and length differed significantly among treatments (p<0.05), and Tukey's HSD indicated that TW was significantly higher (p<0.05) than other treatments with values of 5.00 ± 0.79 g and 1.45 ± 0.06 cm, respectively. These findings suggest that tofu waste or its combination with vegetable waste provides favorable conditions for maggot larvae growth. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
