Impact of campus activities on traffic performance in Lhokseumawe: A case study of Lhokseumawe State Polytechnic using PKJI 2023 approach

Abstract

Rapid urban development in Lhokseumawe, particularly within the education sector, has intensified traffic demand due to the establishment of several academic institutions, notably the Lhokseumawe State Polytechnic (PNL). The influx of students, faculty, and staff has substantially increased traffic volume, impacting nearby roadways from technical, social, and environmental perspectives. The primary roads affected include the Medan-Banda Aceh Road, directly adjacent to the PNL, along with Rajawali Road, Peunteut-Mbang Road, and Meuraksa Road. This study employs the PKJI 2023 methodology to quantitatively assess the impact of campus activities on these road segments and analyze traffic performance to identify the necessary measures for traffic management improvements. The analysis revealed differing levels of road saturation across segments. The Medan-Banda Aceh Road demonstrates a saturation degree of 0.57 on workdays and 0.43 on weekends, highlighting the increased traffic attributed to campus activity during the week. In contrast, Peunteut-Mbang Road and Meuraksa Road exhibited higher saturation levels on weekends, with saturation degrees of 0.62 and 0.60, respectively, which may be attributed to non-campusrelated traffic. Rajawali Road shows a consistently low saturation degree of 0.06 on both workdays and weekends, indicating minimal impact from campus activities. These findings emphasize the importance of effective traffic flow management near educational institutions and provide valuable insights for infrastructure planning to accommodate the varying traffic volumes associated with academic activity. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
