Abstract

High-strength concretes made with a lot of cement, best quality aggregates, additives and superplasticizers, which is vulnerable to large impact loads arising suddenly. Hence, it should be anticipated early. Effort to heal cracks in reinforced concrete is by using ureolytic bacteria Bacillus sp. that are injected into cracks appeared in concrete. Urease enzyme produced by ureolytic bacteria can hydrolize urea and Ca2+ ions to form calcium carbonate (CaCO3) as concrete crack healing. Bacteria concentration for injection material used was 1.53%, consisting of bacteria and growth media 0.60%, urea 0.53%, CaCl2 0.27%, nutrient broth 0.13%, which was taken from cement weight. Impact testing with dropweight test method using a 3 kg iron ball dropped freely onto reinforced concrete plates was used. The specimens used are two-way reinforced concrete plate reinforced with ...8mm reinforcing steel in 3 length variations, i.e., 40x40x5cm, 60x60x5cm and 80x80x5cm. After giving an impact load of 70% of the ultimate impact capacity of control test specimen, impact cracks that appeared were injected with ureolytic bacteria Bacillus sp. solution along with the growth media, precursors and bacterial nutrients into the crack. Further, the test specimens were soaked in water for 28 days to maximize formation of CaCO3. Finally, ultimate impact loading test was carried out at age of 28 days after crack remediation by immersion in water. Results showed that high-strength reinforced concrete plates after crack healing with injection of Bacillus sp. ureolytic bacteria suspension were able to achieve 95.53% of the impact resistance of control high-strength reinforced concrete specimens. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
