Abstract

Stunting, a chronic condition hindering physical and cognitive development in children, remains a global public health concern, affecting over 149 million children under five as of 2020. Poor sanitation is a significant contributor, facilitating disease transmission, impairing nutrient absorption, and perpetuating cycles of poverty and inequality. Addressing these challenges aligns with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 (Zero Hunger) and 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) which emphasize equitable access to nutrition, sanitation, and resilient infrastructure. In Indonesia, Aceh Province ranks fifth nationally in stunting prevalence, with Bener Meriah Regency reporting a 16.06% prevalence in 2023, exceeding the national threshold of 14%. This study uses the Sanitation Adequacy Index, descriptive quantitative analysis, and simple linear regression to investigate the relationship between sanitation adequacy and stunting prevalence. The hypothesis that increased sanitation adequacy significantly reduces stunting prevalence is confirmed, with findings revealing a strong inverse relationship. The regression analysis shows that sanitation adequacy accounts for 72% of the variance in stunting prevalence, with a 1% improvement in sanitation adequacy corresponding to a 0.45% reduction in stunting rates. These results highlight the transformative potential of targeted sanitation interventions in rural planning to reduce stunting and promote community resilience. Policy recommendations include prioritizing sanitation upgrades in underserved areas, integrating sanitation improvements with health-focused spatial planning, and developing inclusive frameworks to achieve sustainable and equitable rural development. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
