Assesment of Land Characteristics for Pacthouli Plantations based on Climate Criteria: A combination of spatial analysis and analytical hierarchy process (AHP)

Abstract

One of Indonesia's important export commodities is patchouli. The nation has solidified its position as a leading producer of patchouli oil. While several regions in Indonesia are renowned for producing high-quality patchouli oil, there is a pressing need to expand patchouli cultivation areas to enhance overall productivity. This research aims to develop a mathematical model capable of identifying potential locations for patchouli cultivation in Indonesia, with a particular focus on Aceh Province. The methodology employed involves a weighted overlay analysis using the analytical hierarchy process combined with geographic information systems. The study focused on four weather-related parameters, which were derived from previously established criteria. The results yielded four suitability zones for patchouli cultivation: highly suitable (S1) with a value range exceeding 0.163, suitable (S2) with a value range of 0.139-0.163, less suitable (S3) with a value range of 0.139-0.085, and not suitable (S4) with a value range significantly below 0.085. The validation process involved comparing the research findings with existing patchouli cultivation sites. The results demonstrated the model's effectiveness in accurately identifying suitable zones for patchouli cultivation, as confirmed by the validation against pre-existing data. © 2025 Institute of Physics Publishing.
