Abstract

The northern coastal area of Banda Aceh city which is a mangrove forest area has an important ecological, social and economic role, where the surrounding community makes it a source of livelihood. This mangrove forest area was severely damaged during the 2004 earthquake and tsunami. For this reason, the government has carried out environmental restoration in this area by re-greening efforts and fostering the community to care about the existence of mangrove forests that can support the natural life of coastal areas. This government effort is also in line with the plan to expand the city's green open space, especially coastal areas that can function as protected forests. Although this area has gradually recovered, the mangrove forest area also has problems including the occurrence of damage caused by community activities in taking forest products in the form of wood for fuel and building materials as well as expansion of fishpond business. In general, the development of mangrove forests in coastal areas in the form of reforestation of coastal areas, provides benefits for the government and society by increasing the quantity of green open space, but this development effort is not optimal. It is recommended to develop mangrove forest in the coastal area of the city of Banda Aceh into a coastal ecotourism area in the form of a protected forest accompanied by restrictions on the area of aquaculture. For this reason, this study was conducted to analyze and formulate the ecotourism concept to support ecological function of mangrove forests in the coastal area of Banda Aceh. Qualitative descriptive research methods were used to collect and analyze data related to the development of coastal mangrove forests in Banda Aceh. The results show that cooperation between the government and the surrounding community is needed to support the ecotourism development of this coastal mangrove forest so that it can have a positive impact on the community economically, socially and ecologically as well as play a role in disaster mitigation aspects for the sustainability and resilience of the city of Banda Aceh. © 2024 Author(s).
