Effect of Transplantation Media on the Growth Performance of Acropora Corals in the Weh Island Marine Nature Tourism Park (TWAL), Indonesia

Abstract

Coral reef ecosystems are among the most productive and diverse marine habitats, providing vital ecological services and socio-economic benefits to coastal communities. However, continuous reef degradation has reduced habitat complexity and biodiversity, resulting in declines in reef fish populations and benthic community balance. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different transplantation media on the growth rate of Acropora corals and to determine whether the application of electric current as a transplantation technique influences coral growth within the TWAL of Weh Island, Aceh Province, Indonesia. The research applied purposive sampling for station selection, and coral growth was analyzed using ImageJ version 1.52. Statistical results indicated no significant difference in the growth rate between Acropora corals transplanted with and without electric current at the 95% confidence level. The average monthly growth rate of corals exposed to electric current was 17.00 mm, while those without electric current averaged 17.80 mm per month. These findings suggest that applying electric current during coral transplantation does not significantly enhance coral growth, implying that environmental factors such as water quality, light intensity, and substrate stability may play a more dominant role in influencing coral growth performance in the study area. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
