Abstract

This study examines the effect of various types of native vegetation on the thermal performance of buildings during summer in Indonesia. Four types of plants were used to test the thermal performance of the building on a 600 x 600 x 600 mm cube test room model equipped with a temperature sensor in the room. Data recording was performed in 10 second intervals for 3 days in hot weather conditions. At peak air temperature conditions, the EGR model with zoysia japonica was able to reduce the indoor air temperature by 0.48 C, while Alternanthera ficoidea red and Rhoeo spathacea were able to reduce the indoor air temperature by 0.98°C and 1.63 °C, respectively. EGR with Euodia ridleyi is the largest which can reduce the indoor air temperature by 2.86 C. The characteristics of shrubs have a greater ability to reduce indoor air temperature compared to cover crops. These results demonstrate the importance of selecting plants with climate in mind to optimize energy savings with green roofs. © 2024 Author(s).
