Abstract

Water quality is crucial for the fishery industry, and photocatalysis is an alternative for the dye wastewater treatment. The photocatalyst ZnO is typically used as a powder, making it difficult to separate from the solution system and obstructing fluid flow. This research aims to immobilize ZnO on a suitable support using appropriate techniques and study its catalytic activities in dye wastewater treatment to solve the problem. ZnO was prepared from either the salt precursor using NaOH-CH3OH (chi-ZnO-NaOH-CH3OH) or directly used commercial ZnO (chi-ZnO-CH3OH). ZnO from both sources was on chi-coated glass beads. Immobilized ZnO from both sources was stable after immobilization, and chi-ZnO-NaOH-CH3OH yielded higher ZnO content (1.791 mg) than the chi-ZnO-CH3OH (0.599 mg) per 10 g of coated glass beads. The photocatalytic activity represented Turn Over Frequency (TOF) of chi-ZnO-CH3OH (0.013 ppm.mg-1.min-1) was higher than the activity of chi-ZnO-NaOH-CH3OH (0.005 ppm.mg-1.min-1), although the rate constant was relatively equal. RhB decomposition reached up to 35% and 21.36% catalysed by chi-ZnO-CH3OH and chi-ZnO-NaOH-CH3OH, respectively, which were much higher than the control. The ZnO photocatalyst can be reused twice, with 35% loss in activity. The photocatalytic activities followed a first-order reaction, with a rate constant (k) of 0.029 min-1 and 0.026 min-1 for each type of chi-ZnO, respectively. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
