Hydrodeoxygenation is the leading technology for removing oxygen and adding hydrogen especially for biofuel production. Palm oil is potential feedstock to be used because of its abundant availability. Hydrodeoxygenation experiments on palm oil require fundamental analysis to evaluate reaction condition. In this report, transmission spectroscopy is used to collect HDO product spectra assess the achievement of HDO palm oil products and the provisional conclusions will confirm the catalyst's ability. The palm oil hydrodeoxygenation reaction was carried out under moderate conditions using NbOPO4 catalyst and without a catalyst. Reaction yield of catalytic hydrodeoxygenation is lower than non-catalytic, there are 63,7% and 70,5% respectively. However, the catalytic hydrodeoxygenation product has a lower polarity which means better properties. Furthermore, the ATR-IR spectra indicate the functional groups of HDO products quantitatively, in particular, C-H with a strong appearance indicating the properties of long-chain hydrocarbons and C=O around the absorbance band of 1180-1260 cm-1 indicating deoxygenation. The deoxygenation provided by the NbOPO4 catalyst had apparently not been achieved despite the liquid product quality was greater than the other product. This is also supported by the morphology of the NbOPO4 catalyst, which identifies the orientation of the particles as the catalytic promoter. © 2024 American Institute of Physics Inc..
