Abstract

Natural disasters in Indonesia have significant impacts on poverty, as they often destroy livelihoods and infrastructure, and increase the cost of living. This study examines the spatial pattern of disaster statistics and their relationship with poverty in Indonesia. Using data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), we analyze the spatial distribution of disasters and poverty. The analysis employs several spatial statistics techniques, including univariate and bivariate global and local Moran's I. Our findings show that areas with high levels of poverty are more vulnerable to natural disasters and that disasters can exacerbate poverty in affected areas. We also identify regional variations in the spatial pattern of disasters and poverty, with some areas experiencing more frequent and severe disasters, and higher levels of poverty than others. Our study highlights the need for targeted disaster risk reduction strategies that consider the spatial patterns of poverty and disasters, and the importance of building resilience in vulnerable communities to reduce the impact of disasters on poverty. © 2024 Author(s).
