Distribution pattern of seismicity locations are used to delineate fault structure as earthquakes occur along active faults. In the case of local earthquakes, variations in the location of earthquakes significantly influence the interpretation. The solutions of local earthquake location depend on the imposed velocity model. The purpose of this study was to investigate variations in the location of local earthquakes generated from different velocity models. Among velocity models used by several agencies and authors include IASP91, AK135 and Crust 2.0 to determine earthquake locations. We experimented IASP91, AK135, Crust 2.0 and the newly found velocity model from AcehSeis Project to locate seven days earthquakes recorded by 147 stations. The locations of earthquakes were determined by using HYPO71. The results show the epicenters and the depths of earthquakes located by using different velocity models vary ten to hundreds km. This large variation of the earthquake locations can lead to fatal errors when determining fault patterns and lineation. Therefore, one needs to determine the correct local velocity models in earthquake localization before using the seismicity distribution to delineate the fault line. © 2024 Author(s).
