Abstract

The shortcoming of high-strength concrete (HSC) is its high weight, so it requires fine aggregate with a low specific gravity to substitute. This study aimed to investigate the effect of substituting volcanic sand on the compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, absorption, and crack patterns under compression. An experiment was conducted in the laboratory by replacing the fine aggregate with volcanic ash by 0 %, 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and 50%. The tests carried out included compressive strength at 7, 28, 56 days, absorption, and observation of the crack patterns. The results showed that substituting 10% volcanic sand could increase the compressive strength, but by replacement 40% decreased the compressive strength by 12.85% at 28 days and 11.87% at 56 days. By substitution 50%, the compressive strength dropped by 20.69% at 28 days and 20.73% at 56 days in comparison with normal HSC. The lowest water absorption achieved by substitution of 10% volcanic sand and the compressive strength increased as the absorption decreased. Replacing volcanic sand lowered the stiffness of HSC, the higher the substitution percentage, the smaller the stiffness of resulting concrete. In general, the occurring crack pattern was the shear type. The replacing of volcanic sand impacts HSC positively and is feasible in construction with high bearing capacity. © 2024 Author(s).
