This chapter aims to discuss the ways different communities may build resilience through heritage conservation in a post-disaster context by contesting the meaning of heritage authenticity. Authenticity has become one of many important values in heritage conservation in normal conditions and post-disaster reconstruction processes. The meanings of authenticity have been understood and perceived differently by different communities and stakeholders involved in heritage conservation, especially as awareness of community participation in heritage planning and conservation increases. Along with this growing awareness, there has also been increasing awareness of the importance of heritage for community resilience in post-disaster contexts. The literature to date has mostly focused on how heritage plays a role in building resilience after a disaster and how the meaning of authenticity in various forms and functions of architectural heritage is interpreted. It is not ethical to pay too much attention to the authenticity of materials in a post-disaster context where the basic needs for health, food, and shelter come first. The delay in reconstructing heritage buildings due to material authenticity considerations might prevent community resilience. In some communities, it is the authenticity of activities and sense of place that contribute to resilience. Therefore, it is not ethical to delete heritage buildings that are destroyed by disaster and rebuilt in the same style but with different materials from the heritage list. This action hurts the community and undermines their resilience. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Andreas Pantazatos, Tracy Ireland, John Schofield, Rouran Zhang; individual chapters, the contributors.
