The identification of heterogeneous such as materials has become one of the major objectives in the field of mechanical engineering. One of capable approaches to achieve the objective is through inverse methods. In this paper, the inverse method of finite element method is used to identify the material properties of a abaca-reinforced composite test model. The material properties identification process is carried out with the development of the initial finite element model of the composite test structure. Subsequently the normal modes analysis is used calculate the modal parameters in terms of natural frequencies and mode shapes of the composite structure. The material properties of the initial finite element model are updated iteratively using the developed inverse method, that are derived from MSC Nastran SOL200 to improve the accuracy of the initial finite element model by comparing the calculated modal parameters with those are obtained experimentally via experimental modal analysis (EMA). The objective is to obtain a suitable set of material properties that closely match the finite element model with the test counterpart. The identified material properties are validated by comparing them with those reported in previous publications. © Published under an exclusive license by AIP Publishing.
