Abstract

This research was performed aiming at evaluating the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of Aceh cattle in East Aceh Regency, Aceh Province. In this case, the quantitative and qualitative data on Aceh cattle according to the Aceh Cattle SNI (Indonesian Standard) can be utilized in seed selection programs and efforts to improve the genetic quality of Aceh cattle. This study was conducted through survey in two districts in East Aceh Regency, those are: Idi Rayeuk District and Birem Bayeun District. The research material involved was 120 Aceh cattle, of which 60 from Idi Rayeuk District, while the other 60 were from Birem Bayeun District. A purposive sampling method was applied to determine these cattle samples. The data that have been collected were further analyzed using a table of frequencies, averages, and standard deviations. The parameters observed were: (a) shoulder height; (b) body length; and (c) chest circumference. The qualitative data observed were the body shape of the cattle: (a) facial line, (b) horn growth shape, and (c) dorsal line. Furthermore, based on the analysis that has been conducted, the results showed that the male and female Aceh cattle in Birem Bayeun District have shoulder heights of 111.75±3.45 cm and 110.0±3.08 cm respectively, the body length of 111.13±3.72 cm and 110.8±2.68 cm respectively, and chest circumference of 142.50±8.86 cm and 139.2±2.98 cm respectively. Meanwhile, the male and female Aceh cattle in Idi Rayeuk District have shoulder heights of 110.1±1.17 cm and 109.4±2.88 cm respectively, body length of 112.8±3.65 cm and 111.6±3.04 cm, and chest circumference of 140.6±4.03 cm and 141.4±5.77 cm. Furthermore, the qualitative characteristics of Aceh cattle according to SNI (Indonesian National Standard) showed that 75.8% of them have a concave facial line, 55.83% of them have a horn shape that points to the side and curves upwards, and 55.8% of them have a concave backline. In this case, it can be concluded that the average body size of Aceh cattle is moderate in both males and females and the male Aceh cattle are larger than females. Furthermore, the qualitative characteristics of Aceh cattle which is according to the Indonesian Standard 2013 of Aceh cattle ranged from 55.8 to 75.8%, so selection should be made for the breeding program. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc..
