Abstract

The use of oil palm shells (OPS) as a coarse substitute for concrete reduces excessive gravel mining, and large volumes of waste are rarely used. Oil palm shells belong to the lightweight material category because their specific gravity is less than 2. Hence, it can reduce the relatively large weight of concrete and maintain its strength. The coarse aggregate materials used by oil palm shells were0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%.The test object was in the form of beams with dimensions of 10 x 10 x 50 cm, with the addition of plain reinforcement with a diameter of 12 mm, used as a medium for conducting electricity during corrosion testing. The corrosion process was carried out using the accelerated corrosion test by considering mass loss (corrosion level) and the amount of electric current. The proportion of 0.5% corrosion level took 5.32 hours using an electric current of 0.45 A, and 1.5% corrosion level took 7.89 hours using an electric current of 0.91 A. The largest flexural strength test results were discovered in the 10% OPS of 2.78 MPa for 0.5% corrosion and 2.66 MPa for 1.5% corrosion. The largest decrease was in the beam with a 40% OPS, 41.84% for corrosion of 1.5%, and 28.23% for 0.5% corrosion. © 2023 American Institute of Physics Inc.. All rights reserved.
