Investigation on wall and floating roof of storage tank by hydrostatic test

Abstract

Wall and floating roofs hold important roles in the serviceability of storage tanks. Wall is designed to resist lateral pressure from fluid in the tank and a floating roof is constructed to prevent evaporation of the fluid and to ensure a safe environment around the storage tanks. During their operational period, the wall and floating roof deck are exposed to moisture and air, so that the steel shell as their composing material may be corroded. The objective of this study was to obtain the structural performance of the wall and roof deck in an oil storage tank located at PT Arun Lhokseumawe. Such a storage tank has not been functioning for 16 years. Site investigation revealed the tank wall, and several connection parts were rusted. To disclose the tank wall performance, the hydrostatic test adopted from the American Petroleum Institute (API) code was employed. Such test was done by filling in the tank with water until several water surface levels. For each level, the wall was investigated and showed considerable lateral deformations. The floating roof deck was studied with establishing several models through analytical study. Those models were loaded with accumulated rainfall on the deck with different water levels. Observation revealed that accumulated rainfall significantly increases the stress and deflection in the floating roof deck in which the restoration is required for this component. © 2023 Author(s).
