Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant activity and sun protection factor (SPF) of Turbinaria decurrens extract using three solvents of varying polarities: n-hexane (non-polar), ethyl acetate (semi-polar), and methanol (polar) and to determine the yield of each extract. This macroalgae was collected from the waters of Samboang, Bulukumba Regency. Antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH radical scavenging assay, while the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value was determined via UV-Vis spectrophotometry method. Total phenolic content was quantified using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. The results showed that the methanol extract had the highest antioxidant activity with the lowest IC50 value of 95.08, correlating with its elevated total phenolic content (52.08 mg GAE/g) and the highest extraction yield (38.09%) among the three extracts. The ethyl acetate extract demonstrated the most notable sun protection effectiveness, as indicated by its SPF value of 5.047, classifying it as a promising UV-protective agent compared to the other extracts. However, the yield value (7.62%), IC50 (205.96), and total phenolic content (31.09 mg GAE/g) were lower than those of the methanol extract. The n-hexane extract displayed the lowest bioactivity in both antioxidant and sun protection activity, correlated with its minimal yield and phenolic content. These findings highlight the significant influence of solvent polarity on extraction efficiency and bioactivity of T. decurrens, underscoring its potential as a source of natural antioxidant and UV-protective compounds. © 2026, Egyptian Society for the Development of Fisheries and Human Health.
