This study examines the distribution of sediment grain size in the coastal areas of Banda Aceh, Indonesia, using statistical analysis, i.e., Mean Size (Mz), Sorting (σ), Skewness (Sk), and Kurtosis (K). Samples were collected from 30 stations representing sheltered beaches, river estuaries, and open water areas. The results show that most sediments are fine to medium sand, reflecting varying deposition energy dynamics. Sorting is predominantly well sorted, except in areas with higher energy, which exhibit poorly sorted conditions. Skewness indicates a dominance of finer grains with a distribution skewed positively. The high Kurtosis values (leptokurtic) suggest well-sorted deposits. This study provides insights into the physical characteristics of coastal sediments, which are crucial for mitigating coastal erosion and flood risks. The findings also support sustainable coastal management practices. They are relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 14 (Life Below Water) and SDG 13 (Climate Action), which contribute to more effective adaptation to climate change and the preservation of marine ecosystems. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
