Comparative Analysis of EPANET and WaterCAD for Water Distribution System Modelling: Features, Applications, and Future Developments

Abstract

This paper compares EPANET and WaterCAD, two widely used software solutions for modeling water distribution systems. EPANET, developed by the US EPA, is an open-source, cost-effective tool known for its comprehensive hydraulic modeling and water quality assessment capabilities, making it suitable for research and academic purposes. WaterCAD, developed by Bentley Systems, offers advanced features like real-time simulation and robust analysis tools, making it ideal for complex network designs and large-scale industrial applications. Both tools optimize network design, manage water quality, and assess system performance under various conditions. EPANET excels in cost-effective modeling, while WaterCAD is preferred for its ease of use and support for larger projects. Despite improvements in system durability and efficiency, challenges such as eutrophication and high energy consumption in pumping systems persist. Future developments should focus on improving usability, integrating with GIS, enhancing optimization algorithms, and advancing data analysis capabilities to improve modeling accuracy. The choice between EPANET and WaterCAD depends on project requirements, budget, user expertise, and the complexity of the modeling task. Both software packages are crucial in managing water distribution systems, contributing to sustainable development and resilience to environmental challenges. © 2026 Author(s)
