Abstract

Abstract: Green synthesis of sulfur nanoparticles was successfully carried out using sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate in the presence (gSNPs) and in the absence (SNPs) of aqueous garlic extract (Allium sativum) as well as their effect on plant growth of Pogostemon cablin Bent. The synthesized gSNPs and SNPs were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM–EDX, and Nano Zetasizer. The FT-IR analysis showed that S–S bond of gSNPs and SNPs was absorbed in a wave number range of 400—500 cm−1. The XRD analysis results showed that gSNPs and SNPs have a crystal form with an average size of 45.0 and 48.0 nm, respectively. The SEM–EDX analysis showed that mass percentage of a sulfur atom of gSNPs and SNPs was 28.1% and 44.4%, respectively. Meanwhile, Nano Zetasizer analysis exhibited that gSNPs and SNPs have the zeta potential values at -10.4 and -10.3 mV, respectively. The effect of sulfur nanoparticles on plant growth of Pogostemon cablin Benth. was studied by foliar spray application at concentrations of 150, 300, and 600 ppm. The results showed that the plants treated with the sulfur nanoparticles produced healthier Pogostemon cablin Benth. plant in each of the plant growth parameters (including the height of the plant, amount of leaves, amount of stem, diameter of the stem, length of the roots, dried and wet weight of the roots, and weight of the plant). The chemical characterization of the patchouli oil after being harvested using GC–MS showed that the percentages of patchouli alcohol (C15H26O) to patchouli plants from treatment of control, IAA, gSNPs, and SNPs were 31.98%, 30.69%, 35.14%, and 35.10%, respectively.
