The rapid increase in wastewater complexity, driven by industrial expansion and intensive chemical use, has created an urgent need for efficient, low-cost treatment technologies. This review combines a bibliometric analysis (2000–2025) with a comprehensive technical evaluation to clarify the research progression of cellulose bead–based sorbents. Key topics include biomass feedstocks, cellulose extraction strategies, bead preparation routes, and functionalization approaches using magnetic nanoparticles, graphene derivatives, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), polymers, and metal oxides. These engineered beads demonstrate high adsorption capacities for dyes, pharmaceuticals, and heavy metals, as well as stable reusability ('5–10 cycles). The adsorption mechanisms and structure–function relationships are summarized to guide future design. While cellulose bead composites show strong potential as sustainable sorbents aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, challenges remain in standardizing test protocols, validating performance in real wastewater, and scaling bead fabrication. Addressing these gaps is essential for advancing industrial translation. © 2026 The Korean Society of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry.
