Agriculture has been one of the most critical sectors in Indonesia for livelihood. Most farmers practice an integrated crop-livestock system in which cattle is one of the dominant livestock. This paper aims to provide a literature review that assesses the role of ruminants, particularly cattle, for smallholder farmers in an integrated farming system and its economic impacts. Related articles were collected and analyzed thematically. Studies were from various disciplines, including ruminant nutrition, feed technology, farming system, social economics, and rural development. The synthesis of the literature suggested four themes: (1) potential for ruminant livestock development with agricultural integration system, (2) support of feed processing technology in supporting feed independence in the livestock community, and (3) Improving farmers' income in an integrated farming system: improving income by optimizing the system, (4) cattle development strategy in supporting regional development in Indonesia. This study's findings inform that cattle farming has played a significant essential role in supporting the smallholder farmer economy. However, traditional management, human capital, and access to information have been barriers despite readily available innovation. Hence, support from all stakeholders is vital in developing cattle farming by transferring it into regional development programs. Future studies could focus on scaling out innovation for cattle development to various settings. © 2022 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
