West Aceh Regency is one of the coastal regions in Aceh Province with significant potential in capturing fisheries. This sector plays a vital role in supporting the regional economy and serves as the primary livelihood for coastal communities. However, its potential has not been fully exploited due to the lack of up-to-date data on leading commodities that can serve as a foundation for regional economic development. This study aims to analyze the potential and development strategies of leading capture fisheries commodities in West Aceh Regency to promote sustainable economic growth. The research was conducted over three months, from June to August 2025, using a descriptive-quantitative approach. Data were collected through field surveys, interviews with fishermen and port officers at Ujong Baroh and Kuala Bubon Fish Landing Ports, and secondary data from relevant agencies. The analysis applied the Location Quotient (LQ), Shift Share (SS), Specialization Index (SI), and SWOT methods. The results identified four main leading commodities: tuna, shark, scad, and hairtail and four other potential commodities: tembang, mackerel, narrow-barred Spanish mackerel, and threadfin. The priority development strategy includes providing ice plants and adopting appropriate technology to maintain product quality, expand markets, and improve fishermen's welfare sustainably. © 2026, Egyptian Society for the Development of Fisheries and Human Health.
