Abstract

The fly ash Nagan Raya (FANR) is a waste material from the power plantation of Nagan Raya, Aceh, Indonesia. Some information indicates that the particle of FANR has a chemical content of Si, Fe, Al, and Ca with a misty surface. The chemical content of FANR is similar to that of cement, so FANR is categorized as a pozzolanic or cementitious material. However, the misty surface of FANR is suspected to influence the properties of mortar, as it absorbs water during mixing and affects workability. This study aims to evaluate FANR as a cement replacement in mortar properties. The investigation was conducted with FANR at 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%, with water-to-cement ratios of 0.55 and 0.50. The study evaluated chemical composition, workability, setting time, and compressive strength. The results showed that FANR has a chemical composition of Si, Fe, Al, and Ca, with a spherical particle shape and a misty surface. These characteristics decreased workability and shortened the setting time in fresh mortar. Finally, the FANR of 5% with a water-to-cement ratio of 0.50 provided the highest compressive strength at 28 days. However, using higher percentages of FANR improved compressive strength after 28 days. In conclusion, the FANR as a cement replacement affected the properties of mortar. © 2025 Author(s).
