Biodiversity of Jurung Fish (Tor sp.) in the Lawe River, Kluet Tengah, Aceh: Environmental and Ecosystem Perspectives

Abstract

Jurung fish (Tor sp.), comprising Tor tambra, Tor tambroides, Tor douronensis, and Tor soro, is an endemic species of the Lawe Melang River, Kluet Tengah District, Aceh Selatan Regency. All four Tor species inhabit fast-flowing rivers with rocky substrates. As a high-value freshwater fish, Jurung is widely consumed by the local community in Kluet Tengah. However, the supply of Jurung fish often fluctuates depending on species availability and location. Recently, the size of captured Jurung fish has been observed to be decreasing compared to previous surveys. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the species diversity, evenness, and dominance indexes, as well as the length-weight frequency distribution and relative diversity of Jurung fish in the Lawe Melang Waters, Kluet Tengah District, Aceh Selatan Regency. The study was conducted from January to February 2022 using a descriptive survey method, and fish sampling was performed using the purposive random sampling technique. Samples collected from the research location were brought to the laboratory for length and weight measurements. The results indicated that the diversity index of Jurung fish across the three sampling stations was categorized as low. This low level was also reflected in the evenness and dominance indexes. Furthermore, the length-weight frequency distribution of the fish caught across all three stations was also low. Notably, this study specifically found that the highest relative diversity level was confined to the upstream station, hosting all four Tor species, while the species richness was significantly diminished in the downstream area. Based on these findings, conservation and management efforts are urgently needed. These efforts should include improving water quality, protecting spawning areas, and regulating fishing practices to help maintain the population and enhance the sustainability of the Tor sp. fish species. © 2026, Egyptian Society for the Development of Fisheries and Human Health.
