Abstract

Bio-nanocomposite films from sugar palm starch, chitosan nanoparticles, and butterfly pea anthocyanins were developed for sustainable food packaging. This study addresses the demand for biodegradable materials by integrating high-amylose sugar palm starch and top-down processed chitosan nanoparticles. The CH/SPS-BP-III film (15 % anthocyanin) demonstrated superior mechanical strength (65.11 MPa), lowest water vapor permeability (4.29 × 10−8 g Pa s−1 m−1), excellent UV-blocking (0.02 % transmittance), and highest antioxidant activity (61.93 %). It also exhibited antimicrobial properties against E. coli and S. aureus, with pH-responsive color changes for freshness indication. This multifunctional film offers a novel solution for intelligent, eco-friendly food packaging. © 2025 The Authors
